Appearance: Yubel has green eyes and dark blue hair, the longest of which reaches to a little below her neck. She’s fairly thin in most respects, and a few inches shorter than average height. Even at the age of sixteen she remains flat-chested and generally androgynous enough so that without the Academy uniform or any other clothes identifying her as female she can still be mistaken for a boy. Around her neck is a thin golden choker, a gift from her mother when she was younger.

For school she wears the standard Obelisk girls’ uniform, a black undershirt underneath a sleeveless top lined in blue at the edges, chest area, and collar along with a blue miniskirt and blue boots. When given the chance, though, she discards that and wears something more casual, such as a T-shirt and pants.

Personality: Having never having been exposed to and twisted by the Light of Ruin (yet), Yubel is much saner than the Yubel of canon. She does, however, still have some trouble getting along with people: she’ll be civil to those she meets, but making friends isn’t something she does well, especially alone. It usually takes a while for her to warm up to somebody enough to start calling them anything closer than a classmate. Being singled out as strange for the early part of her life (first for seeing spirits and then because of her appearance) left its mark on her, giving her an edge of cynicism when she’s in a bad mood, though the effect was countered to an extent when she began interacting more with Judai and his other friends: eventually she got used to them, they got used to her, and over time she also ended up picking up on some of the habits and mannerisms more typical of the boys.

She’s more familiar and outspoken with those she is comfortable being around, and because of that she’s prone to arguing when she disagrees with something. At the Academy, for example, she would occasionally bicker with Sho and later Kenzan over the way they addressed Judai (“aniki,” or “brother”), first out of annoyance and then out of habit and familiarity. When she develops a grudge, though, it tends to stay a grudge for a while until she has reason to change her mind. She can be singleminded at times, especially when angry or determined, and when she’s upset Yubel can quickly become unstable for a while. Yubel easily becomes jealous and/or overprotective, especially when it comes to Judai, and irrational acts on her part aren’t uncommon when this happens. While Yubel knows Judai doesn’t feel the same way about her that she does about him and does her best to respect that, Yubel is still very attached to him, often concerned with his wellbeing over her own, and would envy others whom he considered friends.

Abilities/Strengths: Yubel is an above average duelist, even by Academy standards—near the same level as Judai, Asuka, or some of Judai’s other friends at the Academy, and certainly close enough that she’d provide a challenge. She duels as well as anybody and can hold her own against strong opponents. Additionally, she’s fairly athletic and is a quick runner, though she has little knowledge of fighting outside of Duel Monsters.

In addition, unknown to Yubel but still notable is her powers of darkness, still latent. Yubel is unable to use them and isn’t even aware of them yet, but when provoked or induced—generally by life-threatening danger or events related to the supernatural—they may stir without her knowledge. (For example, the transportation to the Gravekeepers’ dimension in her first year and Judai’s duel against the Chief caused occasional dreams reaching into Yubel’s past life.)

Weaknesses: Though she’s determined to become stronger, Yubel still has some way to go. She’s human and has all the usual human limitations. She’s a good duelist and a fair athlete, but she’s not the greatest of duelists or the best of athletes either. Even her powers of darkness are uncontrolled by her, since she doesn’t even know of their existence yet. Socially, Yubel is also inexperienced when it comes to trying to meet people or make friends, since she tends to stay close to a few people. Tolerance is also something she has some trouble with, as is trying to remain calm or rational when upset—Yubel tends to have a one-track mind when agitated.
